Even though 2019's alligator movie Crawl was a box office hit, its conceptual specificity suggested it would surely be a one-off genre piece, yet on the eve of the film's release, director Alexandre Aja confirmed plans for a sequel focused on new characters dealing with their own disaster.

Even though the sequel was confirmed to take place in a storm-ravaged New York City in 2024, Sam Raimi's recent remarks suggested that the ongoing Paramount-Warner merger complicated matters behind the scenes. But after years of stalling, Crawl 2 is finally a go, with Mason Gooding and Emily Rudd recently announced to lead the film, which has just started shooting in Hungary, with Aja also returning as director.
