2019's Ma was a solid box office hit and a prime example of Blumhouse's low-budget success model, grossing more than $60 million against its mere $5 million budget. And in the years that followed, Ma has become something of an unexpected cult classic, largely due to Octavia Spencer's terrific central performance as the deranged middle-aged villain, and the film's many meme-worthy moments.
Ma ultimately picked up enough traction that a sequel was officially announced in June 2025, with Spencer set to return - no matter that Ma appeared to perish at the end of the first - while the script is being penned by Ashley Nicole Black (Ted Lasso).
In the year that followed, we heard basically nothing about Ma 2, leaving some to suspect that the project might've quietly slid into development hell - especially considering how easy it should be to get such a slam-dunk sequel into production - but this past July, Spencer reassured fans that Ma 2 will soon be on the way, revealing that the filmmaking team is hard at work on the script.
