18. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 - Franklin's Corpse
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre's Franklin Hardesty might've been one of the most annoying horror movie victims ever, but there is a surprisingly great scene involving him in the sequel, which is especially ironic, as said sequel was largely terrible. A screechy, garish affair that takes an ill-judged turn into horror-comedy, this sequel is mostly insufferable, and its strongest moment comes along on that rare occasion when the movie just quietens down for a moment.
In the midst of all this migraine-inducing chaos, we get a gentler moment when Lieutenant Lefty Enright (Dennis Hopper), the vengeful uncle of Franklin and Sally Hardesty (Sally survived but has been left catatonic, and doesn't appear in this sequel), finds Franklin's skeletal corpse in the Sawyer Family's hideout. Lefty is overcome with emotion upon discovering his nephew's body and is soon sent into an angry rage once again, with viewers now having a deeper understanding of his pain.
For real, this part is genuinely moving, and here, the late, great Dennis Hopper reminds us what a brilliant actor he was. Though celebrated for his big, loud performances, he quietly crushes the audience here with his heartbroken words to his deceased nephew: "I'm here now."
