Now, in fairness, Hellboy fans had their pitchforks out for Hellboy: The Crooked Man from the moment it was announced, considering it wasn't the Guillermo del Toro-directed Hellboy 3 they actually wanted.

But everything we knew about The Crooked Man pre-release made it seem cooked.

The mere $20 million budget was apparent in how agonisingly cheap the trailers looked, and there wasn't much enthusiasm for Jack Kesy's casting in the lead role, nor the rather lackluster makeup job compared to those applied to Ron Perlman and David Harbour in prior iterations.

On top of all this, the film wasn't even given a theatrical release in the U.S., instead going straight to VOD - a kiss of death if there ever was one.

While it's clear that the cast and crew gave it their level best to do Hellboy on a budget, they were ultimately overcome by a flabbergasting lack of resources, ensuring it ended up looking like a relatively upmarket fan film, but basically rubbish by Hollywood standards.
