20 "WTF Did I Just Watch" Horror Sequels
11. Evil Dead II
We all love Evil Dead II very much, but man, it is barmy as hell!
To start with, it changes the whole vibe. The first Evil Dead was a straight horror while this follow-up is very much a horror-comedy, and it's also essentially a remake as well as a sequel. The first quarter-hour retells the events of the first film, but with only two of the characters present, and once Ash (Bruce Campbell) is left alone, he is forced to fight a series of bizarre foes.
These include wacky demons brought-to-life with glorious stop-motion that'd make Ray Harryhausen proud, a severed head, that same head's corpse wielding a chainsaw, and even Ash's own possessed hand, which he is forced to cut off. He then attaches a chainsaw to his stump and goes to bat once more.
These deranged set-pieces, directed with manic brilliance by Sam Raimi, make the whole thing even more in-your-face bats**t crazy. Mad to the end, it eventually finishes with Ash being sucked into a portal and landing in the Middle Ages, setting the stage for another wacky installment, which would be 1992's Army of Darkness.
