20 "WTF Did I Just Watch" Horror Sequels
12. Cube 2: Hypercube
Cube 2: Hypercube is a dire horror sequel, yet credit must always be given where it is due: no-one could accuse it of playing things safe.
Instead of sticking to the formula that made 1997's Cube work so well - a cubical prison filled with physical death traps - this one plays with time and space like an episode of Doctor Who. It has parallel versions of its characters, time travel, deadly expanding energy fields (or something) rendered in F-tier CGI... yeah, it's bonkers.
Strangest of all, there's that sequence where two characters begin to have zero-gravity sex, only for time to suddenly dilate so that the two of them rapidly age to death while mid-coitus.
The story eventually ends in characteristically random fashion, with the final survivor jumping through a trapdoor just as the hypercube implodes, only to be unceremoniously shot in the head by one of the authorities whom she meets once she comes to in an abandoned factory. Many of the movies discussed on this list are WTF in the best sort of way, but Cube 2 most definitely isn't in that category!
A prequel called Cube 0 was released a couple of years later, and though that was forgettable, it made the wise decision to just keep things simple and return to the physical traps of the first movie. As Cube 2 reaffirms, going full-WTF just for the sake of it isn't enough. You need good writing and directing as well.
