20 "WTF Did I Just Watch" Horror Sequels
7. Seed Of Chucky
What on earth was Seed of Chucky?
1998's awesome Bride of Chucky took the franchise into horror-comedy territory but still told a familiar slasher movie story and kept things just about grounded. As for this Seed of Chucky, there's no grounding, and there's no proper story.
This largely comes down to a series of baffling and numbingly unfunny meta-gags while Chucky (Brad Dourif) and his wife Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) try to possess Redman the rapper (playing himself) and the real Jennifer Tilly. There's another scene where Chucky kills Britney Spears. As you do.
Seed of Chucky also introduces a genderfluid doll (Billy Boyd) who turns out to be the child of Chucky and Tiffany; Chucky views the doll as male and names them Glen, while Tiffany views them as female and calls them Glenda. This is an obvious reference to Glen or Glenda?, a cross-dressing themed drama from Plan 9 from Outer Space director Ed Wood.
To give credit where it's due, this character and their subplot have aged well, as this is an early example of a non-binary character in a movie. That stuff is good, but the rest of it is a smug and self-indulgent meta-horror that's almost entirely devoid of thrills or laughs.
