20 "WTF Did I Just Watch" Horror Sequels

2. Book Of Shadows: Blair Witch 2

After The Blair Witch Project became one of the most successful independent films of all time, a sequel was as certain as death and taxes. What no-one could've predicted, however, is just how jaw-droppingly misjudged said sequel would be.

So, a follow-up that doesn't actually feature the Blair Witch, that treats the original as a film-within-a-film and that features a group of fans unravelling into psychological hysteria while at the filming location... that was a choice, alright, but not a good one. Dismissing the events of a predecessor as non-canon was a monumentally insulting way to treat one of the most influential horror movies of all time, that's for sure.

If this had been treated as a sort of meta spin-off rather than as a straight sequel, maybe that could've worked. Or rather, it could've worked with a good script and characters, which this film sorely lacked.

There seem to have been some retrospective attempts to reclaim Blair Witch 2 as a misunderstood meta-horror, but for most, this remains a thoroughly unsatisfying viewing experience that flips off not just its predecessor, but the audience, too. For all its weirdness, this movie is so damn boring.
