1 Overlooked Gem Song From Every Beatles Album

9. I’ve Just Seen A Face - Help!

One of the catchiest tracks on Help!, this breezy Paul McCartney song rattles along at a breakneck pace, a perfect match of music and lyrics. Paul sings of seeing a girl for the first time and falling head over heels for her.

Meanwhile, a giddy rush of acoustic guitar and a descending chord sequence under the “falling/calling” refrain mimic the thrill found in Paul’s demonstrative and ebullient description of love at first sight.

The Beatles’ country influences usually showed themselves in a cover version recorded to give Ringo something to do. Here, Paul assimilated a bluegrass flavour into his own pop songwriting sensibilities. The result is one of those tracks you could play on a loop indefinitely.

Help! also featured Yesterday, one of Paul’s most celebrated songs and while that song towers over I’ve Just Seen A Face in terms of reputation but the latter song was just as crucial a breakthrough for his songwriting.
