10 2000s Rock Albums You Constantly Have To Defend Loving
5. Nickelback - Silver Side Up
No one likes to admit it anymore, but ‘How You Remind Me’ was a singalong rock treat at the time of its release.
Arguably the last out-and-out rock track to top the Billboard 200, Nickelback's lead single for their relatively gritty third LP quickly established itself as a modern classic. Gritty is a key word here as the Canadian rockers were still deep in their post-grunge phase, even leaning into heavy metal. The result was edgier, more serious work than the commercially friendly pop rock they're best known for these days.
Coming off the heels of a frosty critical reception to preceding album 'The State', Nickelback came in all guns blazing for their third album thanks to the surprise cult following they'd garnered during the late '90s. Determined to crack the big time, the group piled on the energy and intensity, all while keeping the lyrics and beats relatively simplistic and catchy.
The result was a game-changing hit that, for better or for worse, made the Hanna, Alberta crew household names. While 'Silver Side Up' offers plenty of early noughties rock fun, it's still difficult for many to out and out defend it since it led to everyone hearing the utter torment of tracks such as 'Something In Your Mouth' and 'Photograph' in the years after.
