10 '60s Albums Every Rock Fan Should Own

6. The Doors - The Doors

For most of the ‘60s, rock was still about having a good time. While there would be occasional songs that delved into more serious territory, the end of the decade saw the germs of hard rock bubbling from underneath the surface. Though bands like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath were on the horizon, the Doors were the first to take rock into the darkness.

Coming out of the psychedelic California rock scene, the Doors’ approach to rock music brought a heavy amount of sleaze into the picture, with Jim Morrison emerging as one of rock’s greatest frontmen.

Though the band’s sound was a weird combination of blues, jazz, and rock and roll, the intensity with which they would play it ended up being more than some could handle. The band was already weird with no bass player and a keyboardist in tow, but the way Jim Morrison’s poetry fit on top of these tunes made everything make absolute sense.

Instead of the shiny happy “Peace and Love” side of the psychedelic scene, this album was the dark side of Flower Power, with each track feeling like a bad acid trip into the depths of Hell. The Doors left a lot of destruction in their wake, but what we’re left with is some of the most mind-expanding rock and roll the decade had to offer.
