10 '80s Songs You Totally Forgot Were Great

2. Phill Collins: Sussudio (1985)

In the era of MTV, the visual aspect of an artist needed to be just as captivating as the musical side of things. This was a a time when teen idols like Madonna and and George Michael were flaunting their good looks to help generate record sales. Among such individuals, Phill Collins stood out like a fast spreading bald patch.

With his short statue, middle-aged dress sense, and unnerving grins to camera, he cut a remarkably different shape, to the up and coming pop stars of the day. But he worked it - no one rocked the egg-in-the-nest, as confidently as Collins. And, his confidence was not unfounded. His propensity to write classic pop numbers time and again turned him into one of the most successful solo artists of the decade.

With its pulsating bass line and almost identical synth hook, admittedly, Sussudio sounds uncannily similar to Prince's 1999 (1982), - a point noted by Collins himself - but this was the '80s, everything sounded kind of the same... , and if you're going to borrow from anyone, why not borrow from the reining prince of synth pop?
