10 Albums That Should Have Never Gotten Big
4. Pray for the Wicked - Panic at the Disco
For as long as they've been working the pop rock circuit, Panic at the Disco is one of the few bands that has yet to release a bad album. Though some stuff like A Fever You Can't Sweat Out has held up to the passage of time a lot better than many thought it would, it seemed like the emo theatre kids would have been destined for the bargain bins after a couple of years. Even with the massive surge of popularity coming from the Brendon Urie show, Pray for the Wicked did show them getting into some bad habits.
Taking a full blown pop direction compared to what was happening on Death of a Bachelor, Urie frames this entire album as moving to the big city and finally emerging as a star, which seems odd considering that he did that over a decade ago already. As much as the hooks are still here, the more electrified sounds of the record along with some questionable production choices seem to feel like the band is spinning their wheels.
And then this becomes the biggest record they've made to date, giving them hits like High Hopes and Hey Look Ma I Made It. While not bad songs by any stretch, these surface level Panic songs might have implanted a seed in Brendon's brain that this is what the public wants from him. This might be far from the worst Panic record, but it can't help feeling like the setup for something much worse.
