10 Albums That Turned Out Nothing Like You Expected
2. Rebirth—Lil Wayne
Released shortly after a string of all-time great mixtapes and one instant classic album, Rebirth was... well, it certainly provided New Orleans native Lil Wayne with a rebirth of sorts.
In that, as well as killing off his chance of massive mainstream success, the album also saw him reborn as a corny rock rap cartoon character instead of his zany, wordplay-crazed former self.
This disastrous 2010 rock album is not what anyone expected from the creator of Tha Carter III, a lyrical genius whose surreal and bizarre free associative writing had seen him stand out amongst a crowded field of mainstream rappers. The wild wit and constant verbal invention of his features, freestyles, and singles was replaced by a surreally misjudged mash up of various rock trends.
The rapper returned to form as a lyricist with his later mixtapes, but never won back the crowd with a feature length project after what was widely viewed as a wholesale departure from his sound.
