10 Albums That You Need To Listen To More Than Once

2. Meddle - Pink Floyd

Towards the start of the ‘70s, Pink Floyd were slowly starting to morph into the band that we know them as today. Though it was difficult to get over losing Syd Barrett to his own declining mental health, they were channeling all of their emotions and creativity into their music, with each song getting more and more ambitious as they went on. There was a bit of an adjustment needed for their album Meddle though, and that adjustment’s name was Echoes.

For the first half of this album, you can hear Floyd playing with some new genres and actually pulling them off fairly well like the breezy acoustics on San Tropez and the blues rock going on in One of These Days. For the second half of the record, it wouldn’t be surprising if more than a few fans tapped out from listening to all 25 minutes of Echoes, not really wanting to pay attention to hear this one single track. Once you get past the actual long timecode of the song, this might be the song that turned Pink Floyd into the band we know today.

Over the course of nearly half an hour, you can hear the band using the studio more like an instrument than ever before, only having a handful of lyrics across the entire runtime as the instruments take over and tell a story about what’s going on just underneath the waves. There’s even an argument to be made that the best parts of this song have nothing to do with music, as every band member uses their instruments almost like tools to create strange sounds, evoking the sound of being submerged on the ocean floor and hearing all of the silence around you. You can call it overblown if you wanted to, but once Floyd had this under their belt, they were more than ready to take on something like Dark Side of the Moon.
