10 Albums Turning 20 In 2019
2. Slipknot - Slipknot
For most of the late '90s, nu metal dominated the mainstream. But that genre tag did not seem to have much staying power, and the rap-metal aesthetic was getting stale. But this band from Iowa had different ideas for the genre.
Slipknot came out of the shadows with an album that was an assault on your senses from start to finish. The drums instantly made you perk up, the DJ effects were hypnotic, and the guitars were given a distinct crunch thanks to a minimalistic production approach. But the highlight was Corey Taylor, one of the greatest singers in modern metal. Taylor's ability to go from screaming to singing at a moment's notice is still unparalleled to this day.
While each track tends to have a similar structure, they differ significantly in their intensity and tone. There are pit anthems like "Spit it Out" and "Wait and Bleed," but also more thoughtful tracks like "Liberate" and "Purity."
Slipknot's career continues on with more great material this year with We Are Not Your Kind. But there's a reason why many songs on this record have never left the band's setlist. For Maggots, this is the album that the tribe was built upon.
