10 Albums With Creepy Recording Stories
6. Sgt. Peppers - The Beatles
Once the Beatles had come off one of the most strenuous tours of their career, the band decided to spend the rest of their time in the studio creating the most inventive music they'd ever heard. Though the band had taken quantum sonic leaps on previous records, the more adventurous soundscapes reached an absolute zenith with Sgt. Peppers.
To help spark creativity, the band would often take acid during the writing sessions and then go in to record once the ideas were down on paper. However, one day John Lennon couldn't keep track of his pills in the studio, which led to a bizarre studio hiccup. Thinking he had taken an upper, Lennon accidentally swallowed a hit of acid and began tripping midway through a take. Uninformed on the band's narcotic intake, producer George Martin had thought John had fallen ill, and decided to take him up to the roof to get some air.
Martin's later account of the story recounts Lennon going on and on about the magnificence of the stars along with meeting some of the members of up-and-comers Pink Floyd while still flying. Though the album would go on to revolutionize modern music, the production was more unusual than anything the Fabs had worked on before.
