10 Almost Perfect Alternative Rock Albums
6. Light Upon The Lake - Whitney (2016)
Since 2015, Whitney have released four strong records, but their first was particularly impressive. A mixture of indie-folk rock and alternative melodies, it's easy listening kind of stuff, made for Sunday afternoons.
The group are unique in that their frontman is also the drummer. It's one hell of an impressive feet. Julien Ehrlich skips across the high ranges with a remarkable grace, all while keeping a steady beat. His vocals give this band a marmite affect, however. He sings with such a high pitched breathiness that either you'll be ensnared by his uniqueness or you'll be reminded of Family Guy's most troubling old age pensioner.
The combination of the bluegrass-inspired guitar melodies, augmented by joyous organ and piano parts, creates a carefree listening experience. Any guitar solos are fittingly subtle, often leaving the heavy lifting to a number of trumpet parts. If there's a criticism to lay at this album it's that the one-minute 42-second track Red Moon is far too short. It teases you with some jazzy trumpet and bouncy bass, but it's over, almost before it starts.
