10 Almost Perfect Alternative Rock Albums

2. Metals - Feist (2011)

Canadian singer songwriter Leslie Feist received widespread critical acclaim with the release of her 2007 album, The Reminder. She was praised for her floaty but powerful vocals, and jaunty pop jingles.

For anyone hoping for another pop-centric and commercial body of work, they were sorely disappointed. Feist's follow up album, heard her take on a heavier sound, with sinister vocals and atmospheric melodies. The opening track made this change in tone instantly apparent. A formidable drum beat and a prominent rolling guitar riff resulted in a soaring alt-rock ballad. The aptly titled Graveyard continued this haunting approach.

How Come You Never Go There was the only single from the album, and although catchy and memorable, was anything but mainstream. This harder bite to Feist's sound certainly added a new string to her bow, proving she could go to deeper and darker places.

The latter half of the album suffers from a lack of pacing, however. Feist never revisits the more upbeat drive of the opening tracks, instead she lays on the sadness. Comfort Me is benefitted from some marching drums and a modicum of lightly distorted guitar, but you can't help yearn for a touch more energy.
