10 Alt Rock Songs That Are Impossible To Play On Guitar
7. Guiding Light - Muse
It's doesn't take a rock and roll scholar to know that Muse like to wear their influences pretty heavily on their sleeves. Outside of the Radiohead comparisons that everyone likes to dog them for time and time again, Matthew Bellamy is more than happy to share his love for all kinds of rock and roll, from the Rage Against the Machine fury of Stockholm Syndrome or even the classical influences of a song like Blackout. For the Resistance, all roads led back to Queen, and Guiding Light was the moment where Matt channeled his inner Brian May.
Although most of this song ends up being almost power pop in its delivery, the feel is decidedly stadium rock, with Dominic Howard's drums thundering in the background while Matt plays a few pretty guitar lines to keep everything grounded. Once everything opens up for his solo, Matt really takes the chance to grandstand, making classical style bends and the kind of melodic runs that are not all that dissimilar to the kind of fast playing that you heard on the solo to Bohemian Rhapsody, only with a little bit of a metal edge to everything.
Whereas a song like Invincible off of Black Holes and Revelations may have had more flash in its delivery, there isn't a note that's out of place in this solo, finding that perfect balance between finesse and serving the song just right. It might be a bit melodramatic in spots, but just like the song would imply, those high notes feel like subtle glimpses of light in the darkness.
