10 Amazing Artists With Terrible Debut Albums
9. Supertramp - Supertramp (1970)
Before they would go on to craft cult classic albums such as Crime Of The Century and Breakfast In America, Supertramp started off their career with an unfortunate dud which was little more than a forgettable pastiche of much of the prog rock which was popular at the time.
Due to an urban legend at the time that the best bands recorded at night, Supertramp insisted on cutting their self-titled debut in sessions between 12am and 6am, resulting in their engineer often falling asleep at the studio controls. Part of the reason this debut is so underwhelming is that the classic lineup of the band was still yet to form, as writers Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson were in the group but penned no lyrics on the album. Also absent was future saxophonist John Helliwell, whose saxophone solos would become part of Supertramp's signature sound.
Supertramp is an interesting listen for those curious fans, as it does show that the band has potential, but when measured against the likes of Breakfast In America, the two are almost un-comparable. It would take four more years of refinement before the band struck gold with 1974's Crime Of The Century.
