An artist like few that hip-hop has seen before or since, Tupac Shakur's life was one of contradiction. Staunchly advocating for justice and equality in one breath before calling for the murder of his perceived enemies the very next moment, 2pac's final album was a culmination of his acute paranoia and acceptance of the premature death that had been a lyrical theme throughout his earlier work.

Recorded over a seven day stretch at Los Angeles' Can-Am Studios, the album sees 'pac' adopting the eerie moniker of Makaveli; a rejigged version of the name of the famous renaissance philosopher famed for faking his death to evade his enemies, and channelling all of his energy and strife into what would be the last official studio album that he ever oversaw the completion of.

Analysed and poured over by conspiracy theorists that seek to confirm that he's actually still alive, tracks such as the haunting 'Hail Mary', his R&B flavoured ode to the fairer sex 'Toss It Up' and the celebratory ode to his home'To Live And Die In LA' rank among his best work.
