3. Thirteenth Step - A Perfect Circle
For a band like Deftones, it's one thing to really suggest the kind of abnormal behavior that comes from drug abuse. The idea of being reliant on your vices is almost expected in rock and roll, and people have always been preoccupied with getting that one extra kick to get them through their lives every single day. Billy Howerdel was more concerned about how we got to that point though, and Thirteenth Step is practically a dissection of why man is drawn to addiction.
While the title of the album is named after the proverbial extension of the Twelve Step Program, A Perfect Circle give us no real indication of what drug is at play on every one of these songs. Though it's safe to expect that these are narcotics, Maynard James Keenan frames these songs as if they can correspond to any addicting behavior, from drugs to sex to your own personal vices that you deal with every day.
When you listen to a song like Weak and Powerless, anyone who's ever had to kick a habit can really relate to it, becoming almost subservient to feed your need before anything else in the world. There aren't that many questions answered at the end of things either, just ending by surrendering to the hold these things have on you in songs like Gravity. Then again, The Outsider gives us a clear hint of what this album is about. This is someone looking in on a junkie, and can only imagine what that kind of pain is actually like.
