10 Amazing Hard Rock Songs Featuring Killer Guest Stars
5. Goddamn Electric - Pantera
When you have a player like Dimebag Darrell in your band, you don't really need another guitar player. Compared to the other nu metal centric acts in the '90s, the guitar tone that Dime made on albums like Vulgar Display of Power or Far Beyond Driven was meant to sound as menacing as possible. As the years went on though, Dime managed to get a fellow metal giant to work off of on Reinventing the Steel.
Compared to the usual in studio sessions that you're used to hearing about, this guest spot was about as on the fly as you can get. In between the recording sessions, Pantera found themselves playing at Ozzfest, where they ran into Kerry King of Slayer. Determined to get him on the record, King's solo from Goddamn Electric was actually recorded in a bathroom in one of the dressing rooms.
According to King, they apparently struck magic from the first take too, saying that after he recorded his first pass of the solo, he heard Dime screaming from the other room to not let him play it again because it was already perfect. It just goes to show you that the actual mechanics behind the recording doesn't matter 100% of the time. Whether it's at Abbey Road or near a dressing room toilet, it's fair game as long as the magic's there.
