10 Amazing Rock Albums That Will Scare You To Death
3. Iowa - Slipknot
Every band that makes it big on their first record is going to have to face the music when it comes to the follow up. You may have all of the seeds in front of you to make something good on your debut, but the sophomore album is where things start to get watered down a little bit, with marketing directors stepping in trying to make everything sound a little more radio friendly than normal. Slipknot were never ones to chase radio success though, and they decided to send their listeners into Hell on Iowa.
Starting off with one of the most painful screams imaginable, the rest of the band doesn't let up for this entire project, with Corey Taylor's screams sounding absolutely blood soaked going through songs about isolation like Left Behind and Disasterpiece. Although most of Slipknot's lyrics just have to do with any form of intensity, the centerpiece of this record got a lot darker than songs like Wait and Bleed, like closing yourself off from society on People = Sh*t, tearing down organized religion on The Heretic Anthem, until Corey gives us a few minutes of him alone doing heinous things to a corpse on the title track.
Even without major radio time, Iowa could not be stopped, with the Maggots getting more and more rabid feeding off of the raw intensity of this record. Modern metal had already taken us in some pretty strange directions, but Iowa feels like the musical equivalent to a movie like SAW, with nonstop intensity and songs that will leave you more than a little bit scarred.
