10 Amazing Rock Albums With Terrible Production
4. McCartney - Paul McCartney
The end of the Beatles' tenure just tends to feel a little bit sad when looking back on everything. Though Peter Jackson's documentary assured us that there were some highlights at the time, seeing the ambassadors of peace and love suddenly getting nasty with each other in the press was heartbreaking for music fans to see. Though George Harrison and John Lennon gave us some gems on their first solo outings, Paul McCartney's first step up was a bit jarring to say the least.
Considering this was the man who was known as the perfectionist behind the group who made the band get the perfect take, this is incredibly rough around the edges, with a lot of it being recorded at McCartney's home before being mastered at Abbey Road studios. As Paul tells it, this wasn't even meant to be a proper album at first, with some of the songs being an excuse to test out some DIY home equipment that he had.
If you want to see just how different it is, you just have to listen to Maybe I'm Amazed, which was the only single recorded at Abbey Road and by far the most accomplished track on the album. Paul would definitely come into his own on his later projects, but it's odd for him to go the indie rock route of DIY before any of his former Fabs.
