10 Amazing Rock Songs That Divided Bands

5. Better Man - Pearl Jam

In the music business, there's no way for any band to get too big. Everyone here is looking to get the kind of fame that most people dream of, so you're going to want to shoot for the stars every single time, right? There's something to be said about the slow burn to fame though, and Eddie Vedder had to sacrifice one of his first songs just to keep everything in check.

Compared to the wild zany stuff happening on Vitalogy, Better Man really sticks out like a sore thumb, being one of the poppiest tracks that the band has ever made. And that's because it wasn't supposed to be on the album. The song itself actually dated back to Eddie's old band Bad Radio and was planned to be on Vs. before Eddie shelved it because it was too mainstream than he would have liked.

This was also around the time that Pearl Jam were blowing up, and Eddie probably thought that a song like that would only feed into their star power even more, which was already becoming a major privacy issue for him. Since this was the 'anything goes' album though, Eddie relented and turned the song in, becoming a live show staple and one of the biggest singles that the band ever had. For a song that might be one of the definitive tracks of Pearl Jam's career, it's strange to think that it almost never had a shot to begin with.
