10 Amazing Rock Songs That Got Banned
2. Darling Nikki - Prince
At the dawn of MTV, most of the greatest artists of the time were now being broadcast to our own living rooms. When we saw people willing to push the boundaries of what was okay though, the PMRC had to get involved, with parents getting concerned about what music they were actually buying for the kids when they went into the record store. And before they even touched on hair metal, Prince already had some risque moments that the moms of the world weren't ready for.
Although sex has always been a part of Prince's appeal with songs like Head from the album Dirty Mind, having a blockbuster movie with Purple Rain made people pay attention to every single track on his album, including meeting up with a girl named Nikki. Since most of the song has to do with a sexual encounter and even includes a line about Nikki masturbating, parents were absolutely appalled, thinking that this was absolute filth on the same level as pornography and unfit for children.
What came out of this one song became the Filthy 15, which had a list of every song that the PMRC felt was too graphic for their kids to be listening to, along with the Parental Advisory sticker being put on some of these albums to let parents know what they were buying ahead of time. Congratulations, PMRC. You got what you wanted by censoring these albums, and at the same time gave kids the ultimate playlist of what the more dangerous side of rock had to offer.
