10 Amazing Rock Songs Written For Movies
6. Flash - Queen
Queen had certainly earned their music chops by the time they came out of the '70s. With pop operas and dramatic rock and roll tunes to their name, these guys could have gone pretty much gone anywhere, which they did throughout the next decade with everything from disco to synth rock to rockabilly. However, probably the most outlandish thing they had taken on was when they entered the land of cinema.
When assembling material for the soundtrack to Flash Gordon, the boys came through with one of the greatest opening themes any '80s action star could have hoped for. Unlike the typical pop fodder being spit out at the time, this theme puts you on the edge of your seat from the first time you hear it, almost like Freddie and the gang are getting back in touch with their hard rock roots for a little bit.
However, the collaboration wasn't meant to last, with Brian May padding out the rest of the soundtrack album with instrumental songs, each of which serve their purpose in their own right. Far from just a stumbling block, this song is what got Queen rediscovering their love for rock again, which they would cultivate on future albums like The Works and Innuendo. This could be a crowned jewel in the world of movie-centric songs, but it's all just a walk in the park for Queen.
