10 Amazing Songs That Never Made It Onto A Studio Album

7. Yellow Ledbetter - Pearl Jam

Most of the music that came out of the '90s grunge scene wasn't concerned with sounding pretty. Seattle was known for raining most of the year, and there was nothing else to do but go into your basement and play some of the most depressing music you could think of. While there were countless songs by the Melvins that captured that murky feeling of Seattle, Pearl Jam reminded us that there was still beauty to be found here on Yellow Ledbetter.

Since most of their debut record Ten was framed as a tribute to the music that they loved as kids, this B-side off the Jeremy single sounds like it's ripped right out of Jimi Hendrix's playbook, with Mike McCready coming in with that signature clean tone that could make you cry. As the rest of the band falls in though, Eddie Vedder writes some of his most vulnerable lyrics, talking about a man who has heard about his brother dying overseas and trying to make sense of losing one of the most important people in his life.

Across just a few minutes, you can feel every single one of Eddie's conflicting emotions play out, whether that's disconnecting from the rest of your friends or trying to find some sort of solace to at least keep you grounded for a minute. No matter where this guy seems to fall though, he seems to be his own worst enemy, never really knowing if he's the boxer or the bag. More than anything, it's confused and unsure about it's place in the world...like all great alternative music usually is.
