10 Amazing Songs Written Out Of Competition

9. Live Forever - Oasis

Comparing Oasis to the rest of rock and roll in the '90s is almost like chalk and cheese. Though the Gallagher Brothers annihilated their competition off the strength of albums like Definitely Maybe, there was no way they were in the same category as the alternative rock and grunge that was popular just a few years before. On the other hand, Noel Gallagher's appreciation of Kurt Cobain yielded these Manchester legends their first big hit.

At the start of grunge, Noel absolutely loved Nirvana, only to be absolutely gutted when he had heard of Cobain's suicide. Though there was grieving involved, Noel took exception to the song I Hate Myself and Want To Die, which he thought was a horrible thing to be spreading to the youth of the world. Looking back to his own days without any money and still loving life, Noel sat down one night and wrote Live Forever, whose melody became synonymous with the Britpop sound.

Noel knew he had something on his hands with this one too, with guitarist Bonehead questioning the legitimacy of him even writing the song when he showed it to him. It belonged to Noel though, and it sent Oasis into the stratosphere as one of the biggest band the '90s had ever known. Instead of the dejected sounds you got from grunge, this was the arrival of rock and roll that was loud, aggressive, and full of life again.
