2. Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There
Black Country, New Road are part of the new wave of British post-punks currently flooding the scene. Among the likes of Squid, Fontaines D.C. and Black Midi, they're playing with ever more unusual sounds when it comes to crafting rock songs. Unpredictability is the current name of the game and Black Country, New Road excel at it.
With no less then seven musicians in the band - all fighting for the musical spotlight - there's a lot going on. Watching one of their live performances feels more like a mass jam; a violin might take the lead and then be beaten down by a trumpet or bass line, all while you have lead vocalist Isaac Wood delivering a flood of evocative wordplay, as pretentious as it is captivating.
The group mix folk, indie rock, post-punk and even traditional Jewish klezmer music. Intriguing is the only real way to describe it. You'll be confused and put off at times, and utterly engaged at others. Their new record is set to drop in early February; judging by the varying sounds scattered across the four tracks they've teased, it's going to be an interesting experience.
