10 Artists That Changed Music Genres (And Everyone Hated It)
8. Risk - Megadeth
For as long as Dave Mustaine has been in Megadeth, he has been a bit bitter at having to play second fiddle to Metallica. He had helped build the foundation of some of Metallica's best songs, only to be sacked and eventually forming a band that might be good enough to rival them. So when Metallica set their sights on mainstream success with the Black Album, it didn't take Dave long to try to get on the radio as well.
While Cryptic Writings may have been the first time that Dave had started writing for a more pop audience, Risk is where he really started to jump the shark, bringing in pop producers and coming up with songs that felt like they would be much more suited to any other band. Even with the songs not being the greatest, the main problem here is Dave's voice. Ever since leaving Metallica, Dave has had that anger and rage building up in his voice on every song, so hearing him have that same snotty attitude on a song like Breadline or Ecstasy just feels jarring for most fans to take in.
As much as this album may have been a nice creative journey for the band, Dave has seemed a bit bitter at its reputation in recent years, saying that it would have sold a lot better if it wasn't Megadeth that made it. Then again, any other band would have had to possess some otherworldly charisma to make something like Crush Em actually work.
