10 Artists That Destroyed Their Own Album
2. Funstyle - Liz Phair
There are always a few warning signs that hint that an album might not be up to snuff. From a prolonged release time to some shady deals that go on behind the scenes, there are always those little red flags that signal that an album will be a bit of a rough ride. When you offer a preemptive apology for your album though, you know that you really screwed up.
Then again, it's not like people were necessarily anticipating a true return to form for Liz Phair at this point, considering her steady slide into pop rock on her self-titled album from a few years before. When it comes to Funstyle though, it's almost impossible to take any track seriously, as Liz puts her foot in her mouth with every other song. Using the album title to describe these more experimental moments, some of these delve into weird rapping styles and Eastern spiritualism that come off as either hamfisted or at the very least ill advised coming out of Phair's mouth.
Though there are a handful of decent moments that pop up on this thing, it does nothing to save the album when you have songs that seem like Liz is trying to cancel herself out before she says anything too worthwhile. Even though she thought she was onto something here, Funstyle is probably a genre of music that works better in the rehearsal room for laughs that on a finished album of music.
