10 Artists That Went Head-To-Head With The Music Industry And WON

8. Arctic Monkeys & Myspace Vs The World

Arctic Monkeys were selling out 2,000 seat venues before they€™d even released a single. How could this be?

Well, they went down an unconventional path: releasing music in conjunction with Myspace. Rather than signing to a major label, the band was part of the first generation of musicians who had figured out how to use the internet to their benefit.

Instead of whining about the internet€™s file-sharing websites which facilitated theft, they understood that going online was an ideal platform for getting the word out there. They used Myspace to make songs available to the widest possible audience, put up music videos and tell fans about gigs. All the while they spent nearly nothing on publicity and pocketed the cash. At 19 they had the fastest selling album ever in the UK and a number 1 single.

And what about when Myspace collapsed? They€™d already signed to Domino with complete creative control. Arctic Monkeys are perfect proof that being signed to a major label doesn€™t mean you can€™t be successful if you€™re tech savvy. You can be close to your fans and get rid of the unnecessary people in your entourage doing a job you could do yourselves.
