10 Artists Who Released Their Best Album First
3. Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not - Arctic Monkeys
The seminal debut album from Arctic Monkeys came at a time where British Indie music was seeing a revival with artists like The Libertines, Franz Ferdinand and Kaiser Chiefs were all finding success.
Though all would produce immensely catchy and always listenable tunes, it was the Sheffield-based outfit's 2006 offering Whatever People Say I am, That's What I'm Not that captured the most hearts thanks to its angsty vocals and rough-around-the-edges production.
Arctic Monkeys had a monumental start, and only got softer and more stodgy with age, relinquishing the youthful energy of tracks like Fake Tales of San Francisco or The View From The Afternoon in favour of higher emphasis on 'too-cool-for-school' psychedelic and hip hop influences of later albums.
Turner and Co's six total studio albums all have a deep sense of identity, and while all can be enjoyed if the mood is ripe for the likes of Humbug or Suck It And See, most casual fans will so often seek refuge in the first because of its timeless tunes.
Taking the band from the humble streets of Ecclesall, Sheffield to the bright lights of Los Angeles may have catapulted them to global fame, but in doing so they failed to reach the quality of their immense debut.
