10 Bands Who Justifiably Should Have Been Huge

10. The Go-Betweens

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bqAWH5JWWI Australia's very own Lennon and McCartney and best kept secret. Built around the very contrasting but beautifully complimentary singing and songwriting styles of Robert Forster and Grant McLennan, The Go-Betweens were unashamed romantics. Indeed, arguably their finest moment was the perfectly titled '16 Lovers Lane' album and if they'd emerged in the 60's I'd wager that they would have carved a niche for themselves as songwriters extraordinaire, up there with Holland-Dozier-Holland and Leiber and Stoller - they were that good. The songs were ridiculously tuneful and they wrote supremely eloquent lyrics of the frailty of romance. Whilst the songs often sounded melancholic, they were never depressing, and they were prone to great humour too, the immortal line "I know you're 32 but you look 55" is worthy of Morrissey at his best. Their lack of huge success was baffling. It can't be put down to the fact that they were weird or not particularly photogenic, in Robert Forster they had someone who was described as the best looking man in the world at the time. Neither was it the case that they were uncommercial, they made wonderful pop records that sounded wonderfully tender and romantic as well as being unbelievably catchy - songs like 'Right Here' and 'Bachelor Kisses' will have you whistling along as soon as you hear them. Tragically however, any chance of global stardom will have to be posthumous, as Grant McLennan tragically passed away at the age of 48. A superb talent who died far too young, but the legacy of songs he left behind is well worth revisiting, especially if you have a question about matters of the heart.

What makes music fantastic? Star quality, amazing music, breathtaking lyrics and the ability to bring something new to the table, even if that means a new take on the classics. That's what I love to listen to and write about. As well as writing for What Culture, I occasionally write a blog http://tedney.blogspot.co.uk and sometimes use Twitter, but sparingly @TedneyNash
