10 Bands That Broke Up For Bizarre Reasons
4. Witchrot
While most bands on this list are remembered despite their bizarre break-ups, Witchrot are primarily remembered because of theirs. In a surreal social media statement, vocalist Peter Turik announced that "due to the unfortunate reality of our guitarist f****** my girlfriend of almost 7 years, WITCHROT will be taking an extended hiatus."
The statement was an abrupt verbal ambush that exploded across social media, becoming one of the metal community’s most viral posts of 2018. But as the story behind the post started to unravel, it took a number of unexpected, dark, and eventually positive turns. In the same viral statement, Turik announced that not only had his guitarist stolen his long-term girlfriend, but the band’s former drummer had also passed away. In an extraordinary turn of events, it was revealed a few days later that this was entirely untrue. When talking to Alternative Press a week after the post went live, Turik said the following:
"I asked Simon [drummer] if that [the post] was a good idea. He said ‘Yeah, but say I died, no one will give a shit’… Clearly they did."
Another unforeseen twist of fate occurred around the same time as this interview when Turik performed a complete U-turn and said that Witchrot would be getting back together immediately following their newfound social media buzz. The Canadian doom metal act are still active today and are currently in the process of recording a new album.
