10 Bands That Have Musical Alter Egos

8. Camille - Prince

During every phase of Prince’s career, you could tell that he was doing whatever the hell he wanted. Much like rockers like David Bowie before him, the Purple One was known for dipping his toes into any genre that he liked and seeing where it would take him. Mr. Nelson also had an androgynous side, and Camille was a way to flex some of his songwriting chops.

Being the major workaholic, Prince could never be tied down to one band, always on the lookout for different side projects to play with, one of which included writing songs for a female singer. Though the actual band never materialized, Prince saw this type of songwriting as an artistic challenge to himself, adopting the name Camille when it came time to write songs that had a more delicate approach to the vocals.

Instead of just putting all of these songs under one roof, you could hear faint wisps of Camille being sprinkled throughout his entire back catalog, like when he taps into falsetto on certain songs off of Sign O The Times. Even if Camille only existed in the mind of Prince during his prime, her chops were enough to put any other modern R&B singer to shame. Prince was already larger than life, but sometimes that amount of talent needs to exist in more than just one person.
