10 Bands That Were Haunted While Recording

7. OK Computer - Radiohead

At the end of the '90s, Radiohead weren't doing too bad for a band that was supposed to be a one hit wonder. After the Bends put them on steady ground with the alternative and Britpop crowd, their next album was going to be much bigger than before, getting their now-regular producer Nigel Godrich behind the desk and moving into a lavish mansion to record OK Computer. Although the music was already sad going in, the ominous sounds of the grounds began to grate on some of the band members.

Originally owned by actress Jane Seymour, converting this house into a studio was no easy feat, setting up a booth in an echo chamber to record songs like Let Down. There was a spirit in this house though, with Jonny Greenwood claiming to go to sleep and then wake up in a completely different spot and having no memory of getting there. While some more spooky tropes were to follow, Thom Yorke probably struggled the most, hearing different voices at night and getting more anxious by the day.

Phil Selway even described the moment where Thom started to break, coming down for breakfast one morning with bits of his hair completely gone, trying to shave his head in the middle of the night before being too exhausted, leaving Phil to do the rest of the job for him. The results may have been one of the greatest records of the decade, but when you hear all that went into it, that sinister edge of a song like Climbing Up the Walls may be coming from a more genuine place than most of the band would like to admit.
