10 Banned Hard Rock Music Videos

7. Mr Bungle - Quote Unquote

Before Mike Patton joined Faith No More, there was Mr Bungle. To describe the band’s sound is to lose yourself in their madness but “horror-soundtrack-cum-art-rock-song” is as appropriate as will suffice for this one.

Fitting then, that Quote, Unquote’s video is full of frighteningly bizarre imagery set to it’s rhythmic bouncing: a party of masked man quietly displaying their concealed weapons to the camera, a strange figure drags a doll along a train line and perhaps most memorable of all the band all in Halloween masks hang from meat hooks above what appears to be a theatre stage.

It’s a fever dream and MTV wanted nothing to do with it because of its deliberately strange tone. They couldn’t find any specific rule-breaking - it wasn’t sexual or even especially violent - so “weird imagery” would have to suffice. Still, it set the stage for Mr Bungle because this isn’t exactly out of sorts for the band and the census would have to come to expect it. That being said, upsetting everyone on your first go is worth at least a polite golfclap.

Before the music video was even shot the band already had issues, being forced to change the title from “Travolta” after John Travolta threatened legal action.
