10 Best American Classic Rock Bands Of All Time

3. The Doors

Though many rock bands were taking chances as the 60's progressed, many still seemed to be rooted in the basic rock song formula. Once the Doors worked their way into the pop sphere, the rulebook to rock had to be rewritten thanks to their otherworldly voice.

With their unusual sound, it was a small miracle this band even became famous at all. The sound may have had tied to the blues or to folk, but the band's experimentation with jazz, avant garde, and even musical theater left many fans in stunned awe. Right at the center of everything was Jim Morrison, whose magnetic stage presence was the blueprint for the wild frontman. Mick Jagger may have had the star power, but Morrison felt like a freak of nature as he opened up his throat to create visceral sounds no one had heard before.

Beyond just the music, the Doors' impact seemed to hit a nerve with anyone dreaming of making something more than just a few guitar riffs. Throughout each record, the band seemed to be looking forward for the future of the genre, commanding people to break out of their shells and do something more with their lives. Rock may have been fun at first, but this was the sound of rock growing up into something that can shake the world.
