10 Best Classic Rock Ballads
2. Wild Horses - The Rolling Stones
Throughout their career, the Rolling Stones were known for their raw and unhinged blues rock scorchers. Whether it was the maniacal rock of "Satisfaction" or the samba-fueled Hellscape of "Sympathy for the Devil," the Stones always had a sinister edge to each song they put out. Once the band hit their prolific middle period though, things began to turn a corner.
Though the band had always been rooted in the blues, Keith Richards always had a particular soft spot for the old country music coming from America. Composed in his now classic open guitar tuning, "Wild Horses" was a soul-bearing experience, with some of the most beautiful melodies of the band's career. Mick Jagger sounds like a man who just had his heart ripped out as he realizes no amount of material pleasure will ever make up for how you treat the people you love.
With his romance now in the rearview, Jagger wonders if there even was any love between them in the first place. The only thing giving him comfort is that maybe one day he will be able to ride the wild horses with his estranged lover after they've departed from this world. Even if you're not on the same trip as Mick is, everyone is probably hoping there's a wild horse waiting for them somewhere down the line.
