10 Best Cover Songs In Classic Rock

6. Crossroads - Cream

At the end of the 60's, Cream came to the forefront as one of the greatest blues band of the day. When most British bands were still copying the model that Little Richard and Chuck Berry had started with, these were guys had clearly done their homework on the real blues legends of John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters.

Though the band had their lion's share of great original tunes at their disposal, something even more intriguing came once you put on their record Wheels of Fire. While this double release featured a slew of new material from the band, the talent of these players was really showcased on the second disc, which featured a tremendous set of live cuts. In another case of pulling from Robert Johnson, "Crossroads" is the tune written about the fateful night the bluesman allegedly sold his soul to the devil on a deserted highway in the South.

The riff that Eric Clapton puts in this tune is one of the nastiest of the entire decade, while many guitar aficionados are still trying to figure out the genius behind the guitar solo. Though Clapton attributes his fantastic solo work to him losing the timing of the song, that didn't stop his fretwork from becoming one of the most legendary blues interpretations of the rock era.
