10 Best Debut Albums Of 2013

4. Disclosure - Settle

Image22 Disclosure are brothers Howard and Guy Lawrence whose debut record received mass critical acclaim, it was even nominated for Grammy Award this year. Their sound mixes synth pop, house and UK funk with a stab of 90s house chucked in. For a duo so young, Guy is 21 while Howard is only 18, the boys have certainly made a huge impression on the UK dance scene with Settle reaching number 1 in the album charts. For an opener album it is a confident and accomplished record (the lads compare themselves to Daft Punk) bursting with playful and high energy dance classics and awesome guest stars including Jessie Ware, Sam Smith, AlunaGeorge and Eliza Doolittle. Most recognisable tracks on the album include Latch (featuring Sam Smith) and F For You which have been absolutely everywhere this summer, along with When A Fire Starts To Burn which swims in 90's house nostalgia, but considering Guy and Howard aren't old enough to recall it first time round the record takes on a refreshing approach. The point is that today's young band's are making music as compelling as established acts but with more panache and sharper bone structure to turn all your hairs grey. Dirty grime motifs in Second Chance and Confess To Me conclude that effortlessly cool beats and hooky choruses in Settle are an unashamed celebration of UK dance culture. It's this desire to put foot to pedal and make a head-battering racket that sets Disclosure apart. That and there awesome live sets.
