One of Lovato's most notable issues before Unbroken was her public struggle with self-harm. Fix a Heart is a dialogue with this part of her life, and with someone who only made it worse. It's jarring to hear such honest lyrics as, "It's like you're pouring salt in my cuts." But it also presents this relationship as mutually destructive; she takes the blame just as much as she gives it. The melodic simplicity of this tune works heavily in its favor, with each note of the chorus being its own declaration. And again, we come back to her ability to sell anything with her voice: few artists would be able to hook me in with the phrase, "I just ran out of Band-Aids," but Lovato manages to do just that.
