10 Best Drum Solos In Classic Rock
7. In The Air Tonight - Phil Collins
It might be seen as a travesty to put a song that uses a drum machine on a list of the greatest drum solos of all time. How do you say that a song is a true musical feat when all someone had to do was plug in the right BPM into their programmer?
All of which is true about "In the Air Tonight," with almost 2/3 of the song being dominated by just a simple drum machine keeping time while Phil Collins broods over the loss of his relationship. However, Collins was always a drummer first and a songwriter second, which meant that we were in for something epic by the song's end.
Just when the backing track becomes too much to bear, Collins approaches his drum kit and proceeds to absolutely wail with one of the best drumming sections ever to be heard in pop music. Given the song's minimal production at the start, the drums fill the soundstage when they enter and breath new life into this pained song of lost love. You could argue that this entry could be considered more of a drum fill than a drum solo, but there are only a handful of drum performances that have etched themselves in the minds of listeners quite like this one has.
