6. Shout at the Devil - Motley Crue
Motley Crue are one of the few bands that you could say started hair metal. Along with acts like Van Halen, the band took all the theatrical aspects of 70's glam and turned them into a ferocious form of hard rock music. While Too Fast For Love was the world's first introduction to the band, Shout At the Devil showed them turning into something much more dangerous than just a party rock band.
The band's debut is a classic among metal fans, but it's sound seemed to owe a lot to punk rock and even power pop from time to time. From the pentagram that adorns the cover, this record is a much different beast with songs that pack a lot more punch like "Looks That Kill" and the title track. It may have still been in the mold of hair metal, but the actual sound behind these tunes had something much deeper lurking beneath the surface. Even slower songs like "Danger" had an underlying sense of dread that not many other power ballads could muster.
The shift worked out so well the band even snagged a spot opening on Ozzy Osbourne's stadium tour, which brought them to a whole different level of notoriety. The band would have highs and lows after this release, but this metallic scorcher was just the right amount of kickass they needed to become metal giants.
