10 Best Grunge Albums You Need To Hear

9. Apple - Mother Love Bone

Even when grunge was typified by dirty production and a more DIY attitude, that's not to say that they slagged off on sounding massive. With Mother Love Bone's debut release, the rock world got a peek at what grunge rock could have sounded like if it had entered the arena.

The riffs behind this act are certainly anthemic when stacked up to their hometown contemporaries, while Andy Wood brings the swagger to the band's initial groove. When people think of the grunge frontman, more often than not people think of an unassuming guy who is very introverted and unconcerned with the idea of fame. With his stage presence, Wood was the antithesis of what was expected, as he pranced the stage like an alt-rock update of Freddie Mercury's persona.

Coming at the dawn of the decade, Mother Love Bone seemed on the cusp of becoming not only the definitive grunge band, but one of the greatest bands of the 90's. In a devastating blow, Wood's heroin addiction resulted in him dying of an overdose just before their debut hit shelves, leaving Apple as the band's unintended epitaph and a great what-if story in the grunge scene.
