10 Best Grunge Albums You Need To Hear

7. Core - Stone Temple Pilots

In grunge's glory days, Stone Temple Pilots tended to get far too much unwarranted hate. With their baritone vocalist and groovy guitar parts, the influence of Pearl Jam on these guys was evident from the start. Add to that the fact that the band came from San Diego and the word "posers" was on the lips of every grunge devotee.

As many were crying heresy, they didn't pay attention to the fact that the album in question, Core, has some of the most rocking moments in grunge history. From the opening snarl of "Dead and Bloated," the band possessed a certain amount of chutzpah in their delivery that seemed much more authentic than the other wannabes they were lumped in with. The record also has an incredible flow to it, with jams like "Plush" complimented by slower moments like the haunting acoustic cut "Creep."

Of all the bands of the era, STP's Scott Weiland had some of the greatest energy as a frontman, who favored honing real vocal performances rather than having a more brooding stage demeanor. Even if they were pegged as copycats from the very start, Core is the perfect example of not believing everything you hear.
